Balance of Yin and Yang: The Fundamental Source of All Phenomena

Harmonizing the Five Organs for Better Sleep

Sleep is the physiological process of natural transformation between Yin and Yang energies. IfImbalance of Yin and Yang: Yang cannot enter Yin.then the mind remains unsettled, tossing and turning. TCM believes that the root cause of insomnia lies inDysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs and imbalance of Qi and bloodCommon triggers can be categorized as follows:

Yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, floating heart spirit

Yin deficiency fails to anchor Yang, causing Yang qi to float outward and disturb the heart-mind. Two common patterns:
  • Heart-Kidney DisharmonyKidney yin deficiency with excessive heart fire. "Lingshu: Xie Ke" states: "The heart is the master of all five zang and six fu organs, and the residence of spirit." When kidney water fails to nourish heart fire from below, heart fire becomes hyperactive, leading to restlessness, insomnia, accompanied by afternoon fever, night sweats, and soreness and weakness in the waist and knees.
  • Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire: Commonly seen in individuals with yin deficiency or excessive physical exertion, where deficient heat disturbs the interior and unsettles the heart-mind. Sleep difficulties of this type are often accompanied by five-center heat (heat in the palms, soles, and chest), dry mouth, and a parched throat.

Yang excess prevents entry into Yin; pathogenic factors disturb the viscera and bowels.

Excessive yang heat or internal accumulation of pathogenic factors obstructs the interaction between yin and yang, leading to restlessness of the heart spirit.
  • Liver fire disturbing the spiritEmotional stagnation leads to liver qi stagnation transforming into fire. As stated in the *Su Wen: Ling Lan Mi Dian Lun*: "The liver is the general of the body, responsible for planning and strategy." When liver fire becomes excessive and disturbs the heart spirit, it causes irritability, anger, insomnia, vivid dreams, and in severe cases, dizziness and blurred vision.
  • Internal disturbance of phlegm-heat: Improper diet leads to dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, causing internal accumulation of phlegm-dampness. Over time, this stagnation transforms into heat. Zhang's Medical Compendium states: "Phlegm-fire disrupts the mind, causing mental unrest."

Stomach qi disharmony leads to restless sleep.

The "Huangdi Neijing" (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) proposes thatWhen the stomach is unsettled, sleep cannot be peaceful.Irregular eating habits (e.g., overeating, excessive consumption of spicy foods) or a weak spleen and stomach can lead to food stagnation, rising turbid qi, and disturbance of the heart spirit. Symptoms include abdominal bloating, belching, and restless sleep at night.

Sleep nourishes the body's organs like gentle rain. When you reach deep sleep, your blood and energy flow smoothly, your meridians return to balance, and your organs undergo profound renewal: Your heart-mind rests in peace, bringing mental clarity; your liver stores blood, ensuring calm dreams; your spleen functions freely, distributing essential nutrients; your lungs regulate qi with ease; and your kidneys conserve essence, anchoring your foundation. Quality sleep and organ health support each other in a virtuous cycle, unlocking vitality from within.
